Transforming Education in Baltimore City
Since its inception in 1992, The Ingenuity Project has been dedicated to revolutionizing the educational landscape for Baltimore City students. Founded by visionary leaders and supported by The Abell Foundation, this initiative was born from the question: "What kind of academic program would it take to prepare students for national competitions in mathematics, science, technology, and related fields?" The answer was a rigorous, accelerated curriculum designed to foster excellence in STEM disciplines.
Building a Legacy of Success
The Ingenuity Project began with a select group of sixth graders at two middle schools, paving the way for a high school program at the prestigious Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1997. This program has consistently produced exceptional students who have gone on to compete in renowned competitions such as the Siemens Westinghouse Competition and the Regeneron Science Talent Search finals. Graduates have gained admission to elite institutions including Johns Hopkins University, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Stanford, and MIT.
Impacting the Community
In 2023, 9th and 10th graders in The Ingenuity Project achieved remarkable results, with 80% earning a grade of 80 or higher in their STEM classes. Additionally, 86% of 8th graders completed honors algebra or geometry with similar success. Impressively, 99% of graduates were accepted into college, with 87% gaining entry into competitive programs. The program's commitment to diversity has led to 50% of middle school students performing in the top 10% nationally by the end of eighth grade.
