About Imperial Valley Food Bank

Established in 1991, the Imperial Valley Food Bank began as a grassroots effort by a college professor and his students who served food from a garage. Recognizing the urgent need for food assistance, a group of dedicated residents formed a nonprofit corporation in 1992. By 1997, the Food Bank found a permanent home in a newly built 5,000 square foot facility. The demand for food assistance grew rapidly, especially following the economic recession in 2007, leading to the construction of a second warehouse in 1999.

In 2019, the Imperial Valley Food Bank opened the Rabobank Center, a state-of-the-art facility that spans 28,000 square feet. This new center features essential refrigeration and freezer space, loading docks, a teaching kitchen, and an outdoor amphitheater, allowing for increased food distribution capacity and sustainable rental income. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Food Bank served an astounding 29,000 people a month, demonstrating the critical role it plays in the community.

Food insecurity in Imperial County is a pressing issue, with an estimated 17% of residents affected, and a staggering 25% of children facing hunger. These rates are among the highest in California, underscoring the urgent need for action. By alleviating hunger, the Imperial Valley Food Bank strengthens the community, enabling children to learn better, reducing illness, increasing productivity, and breaking the cycle of poverty.
