Illinois Stewardship Alliance

Our Story

In 1974, a group of dedicated individuals in downstate Illinois united to combat the devastating effects of coal strip mining. Frustrated by pollution, hazardous waste, and the destruction of prime farmland, they formed the Illinois South Project. This grassroots movement mobilized stewards of the land to demand protection for family farms, rural communities, and the environment. Their efforts culminated in the passage of a landmark federal law in 1977 that safeguards our land and water from the adverse impacts of coal mining. Today, the Illinois Stewardship Alliance continues this legacy as a statewide organization dedicated to fostering a local food and farm system that is economically viable, socially just, and environmentally sustainable.

Impact

In response to the pandemic's impact on the food system, the Illinois Stewardship Alliance distributed $250,000 through the Resilience Fund to help farmers scale up operations and meet the growing demand for healthy local food. The organization has also successfully passed the Seed Library Act and the Home-to-Market Act, which support small farms and food businesses. Additionally, $500,000 in state funding was secured for a SNAP match program at farmers markets, making fresh produce more accessible to SNAP recipients.
