Hydrating Humanity Inc. was founded by Matt Peterson, who witnessed the devastating effects of polluted water during his time working for the US Government in the 1990s. This experience ignited a passion to make a difference, leading to the creation of a nonprofit dedicated to providing clean water and hygiene education to those in need, particularly in East Africa.

A Journey of Compassion and Action

In 2002, inspired by a friend's work in freeing people from slavery, Matt sought a creative solution to the water crisis he had seen firsthand. After much prayer and contemplation, he developed a business model that involved selling bottled water in the United States to fund clean water initiatives in Africa. With the support of Pat Selvey, a fellow advocate for clean water, and a community of volunteers, the vision began to take shape.

In 2005, after overcoming initial challenges, Hydrating Humanity successfully dedicated its first water well in Tanzania, serving a school of 1,000 students. This milestone marked the beginning of a transformative journey, as the organization learned that providing clean water alone was not enough. Hygiene education became a crucial component of their mission, ensuring that communities not only had access to safe drinking water but also understood the importance of sanitation and hygiene practices.

Impacting Lives Daily

Today, Hydrating Humanity serves over 605,000 people through more than 1,210 fresh water wells across East Africa. The organization has also provided hygiene education to over 650,000 individuals, empowering them with knowledge that promotes health and well-being. The impact of this work is profound, as families no longer have to rely on contaminated water sources, significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases.
