Hyde Park Youth Symphony

Our Story

The Hyde Park Youth Symphony began in 1955 when Claire Despres Oppenheim's living room became too small for her string students. Claire, a dedicated Hyde Park resident, started teaching music in the 1940s. In October 1955, she, along with interested parents, founded the Children’s Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, directed by Charles R. Buckley. The organization became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 1995, a year after Claire’s passing. Today, HPYS serves nearly 100 students on the South Side, making it one of the fastest-growing orchestral programs in Chicago.

For over 60 years, HPYS has provided a high-quality arts experience for youth musicians, nurturing a lifelong love of music. The organization serves a diverse range of young people and families from various backgrounds, uniting them in the joy of making music together.
