Our Story
The journey of Huntsville Botanical Garden began in January 1980, when the Huntsville-Madison County Botanical Garden Society was formed. Initially meeting in various locations, the Society's determination led to the City Council granting them 35 acres of land with a challenge to raise $200,000. In just six months, this goal was achieved, marking the beginning of a beloved community asset.
With the help of dedicated volunteers known as the "Bushwhackers," the Society began shaping the garden, culminating in the planting of a Southern Magnolia in October 1985. This act symbolized the community's commitment to nurturing this green oasis. The late '80s and early '90s saw the Garden expand its lease and strive for world-class recognition, officially opening in 1988.
