About the Humane Society of Western Montana

Founded in 1963, the Humane Society of Western Montana (HSWM) has been a beacon of hope for pets in need. Initially established to combat the overwhelming pet overpopulation in Missoula, HSWM has evolved into a vital community resource. Through the years, the organization has successfully reduced the number of pets needing rehoming from over 8,000 to approximately 1,400 annually, thanks to community support and spay/neuter initiatives.

Our Mission

HSWM is committed to enhancing the welfare of pets across Montana. With a focus on underserved communities, the organization provides essential services such as free vaccine clinics, low-cost spay/neuter programs, and a robust foster care system. HSWM believes that every pet deserves a loving home and access to necessary care.

Impact in 2023

In the past year, HSWM has made significant strides in pet welfare, achieving:

  • 1,100 successful adoptions
  • 3,720 pet vaccinations at no or low cost
  • 28,854 meals provided to pets in need
  • 2,190 spay/neuter surgeries
