About Napa Humane

Napa Humane, the Humane Society of Napa County and SPCA, has been a beacon of hope for animals since its inception in 1973. Founded by passionate advocates for animal welfare, the organization emerged from a pressing need for improved standards of care for homeless animals in Napa County. By collaborating with local animal services, Napa Humane pioneered the first spay/neuter referral service in the county, taking a significant step towards controlling pet overpopulation.

Over the years, Napa Humane has expanded its services to include lost and found assistance, humane education, and a dedicated adoption center adjacent to the Napa County Animal Shelter. In 1990, the organization took a monumental step by acquiring a fully-equipped veterinary clinic, transforming it into a high-volume, affordable spay/neuter clinic that continues to serve the community today.

In 2001, the Napa River Flood Control Project posed a significant challenge, leading to the demolition of the shelter. While the County rebuilt its facility, Napa Humane faced the daunting task of relocating without sufficient compensation. This adversity prompted a critical reassessment of the organization’s mission, shifting focus from merely sheltering animals to implementing proactive solutions that prevent homelessness among pets.

Today, Napa Humane is committed to changing attitudes and practices surrounding pet ownership. By providing education, resources, and support, the organization aims to strengthen the human-animal bond and enhance the quality of life for both animals and the community. Since refocusing its efforts in 2002, Napa Humane has successfully reduced the number of companion animals surrendered at the Napa County Animal Shelter, demonstrating the effectiveness of its strategic approach.

Napa Humane has prevented overpopulation of an additional 57,856 offspring by performing 3,616 surgeries so far this year.
