Our Story
Founded in 1988 by compassionate members of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Housing Assistance Corporation emerged from a deep concern for community members living in unsafe and deteriorating homes. Initially, a group of volunteers began addressing minor home repairs, but as the needs of the community became clear, the organization expanded its mission. Under the leadership of our first Executive Director, Mike Oliphant, HAC developed both single and multi-family housing projects, including the completion of Sugarloaf Apartments in 1994, which provided essential rental housing for seasonal farm workers.
Recognizing that housing is more than just shelter, HAC has integrated financial education services into its offerings, empowering individuals with the knowledge to achieve economic advancement. Since becoming a grantee of the North Carolina Community Development Initiative in 2004, HAC has diversified its programs, significantly increasing housing production and outreach.
