House of the Carpenter

Our Story

The House of the Carpenter was established in 1964 in partnership with the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. This mission project was initiated to address the increasing needs of individuals and families affected by the decline of the coal and steel industries in the region. Initially operating from an old Victorian home on Wheeling Island, the organization provided essential services such as clothing, food, and utility assistance for thirty years. In 2000, a new facility was built at 200 S. Front Street, where the House of the Carpenter continues to thrive today. Over the years, various ministries have been developed to support and empower the community, including the recent establishment of the Toni and Nancy Bedway Center for Youth in 2020.

Impact

The House of the Carpenter offers holistic support to the community, running programs for children, youth, and adults six days a week, significantly enhancing lives in the Upper Ohio Valley.
