Our Story

In March 2004, a group of six dedicated Dane County residents, including local AODA counselor Shelly Dutch, gathered to discuss the urgent need for a recovery school in Madison. Recognizing the lack of educational options for teens recovering from substance use disorders, they embarked on a mission to create a safe haven for these young individuals. After extensive research, they discovered that while recovery schools existed across the country, none were available in Dane County.

With a generous $10,000 donation from a local family, Horizon High School was established in late January 2005, starting with just five students in a church basement. The school has since flourished, forming a partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District in 2011, allowing it to serve even more students while maintaining its independence.

Impact

Since its inception, over 200 young people have found a supportive educational environment at Horizon. Many former students are now thriving in colleges, universities, the military, or as active community members.
