Founded in 1971 by six passionate individuals, the Hooved Animal Humane Society (HAHS) is the first humane society in the United States dedicated to the welfare of large animals, particularly horses. With a mission to promote humane treatment through education, legislation, and intervention, HAHS envisions a world free from abuse and neglect for hooved animals.

Over its 50+ years of operation, HAHS has played a pivotal role in passing significant animal welfare legislation, including the Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act. This empowers the organization to investigate and intervene in cases of animal abuse and neglect, responding to thousands of calls for help and successfully rehabilitating numerous hooved animals.
