Homeless Youth Alliance
EIN: 81-3036333 · San Francisco, CA
Our Story
In 1992, a pivotal study commissioned by the City of San Francisco revealed the alarming health and psychological challenges faced by homeless youth in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood. This led to the formation of grassroots efforts aimed at reaching these vulnerable young people. Among these initiatives were the San Francisco Needle Exchange and the Haight Ashbury Youth Outreach Team. It was during this time that Mary Howe, a former homeless youth herself, began her journey of helping others in need.
In 2006, Mary merged these two organizations to create the Homeless Youth Alliance (HYA), the only grassroots harm reduction coalition in San Francisco designed specifically for marginalized and underserved youth experiencing homelessness. HYA has since grown into a vital resource, reaching approximately 13,000 at-risk youth annually through a drop-in center, harm reduction education, and comprehensive medical and mental health services.
Impact
HYA serves around 13,000 at-risk youth each year, providing essential services that foster trust and facilitate access to care.
