Our Story

Founded in 1968, Highland Community School emerged from the vision of dedicated parents seeking a transformative educational approach in Milwaukee's central west side. Despite the challenges of crime and socio-economic hardship in the Concordia and Near Westside neighborhoods, the community rallied around the Montessori philosophy, fostering a nurturing and socially responsible environment for children.

Initially located in the historic Victor Schlitz mansion, Highland grew as parents became integral to its daily operations, setting a standard for active involvement that continues today. In 1996, Highland made history as Milwaukee's first charter school, later relocating to the Pabst mansion to accommodate its expanding community. By 2012, Highland found its current home at 17th and Highland Avenue, solidifying its commitment to diverse learners and their families.
