Empowering Women Farmers in Uganda
In Spring 2021, a group of four graduate students from Texas A&M University, including Ryan Staples and Meikah Dado, participated in an international business case competition. Their challenge was to devise innovative solutions to combat the inefficiencies in food systems that contribute to global hunger. Focusing on Uganda, where one-third of the population suffers from chronic malnourishment, they proposed a groundbreaking idea: providing tablets loaded with agricultural training videos to women subsistence farmers.
This innovative approach led to a top-three finish among over 65 prestigious business schools worldwide, including Harvard and Wharton. Ryan's determination to turn this idea into reality sparked the creation of Her Mighty Hands, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. With the support of generous donors, including family, friends, and professors, the pilot project was launched, partnering with the nonprofit Field of Hope.
During the pilot program, twenty women participated, with ten having access to smartphones. The results were astounding: two families sent their children to school for the first time, showcasing the transformative power of education and technology.
Impact of the Program
Women equipped with smartphones earned 6.8 times more than their counterparts and enjoyed food security for 88% longer, highlighting the significant impact of the agricultural training video pilot program.
