About Helpmate
Founded in 1978 as a task force of the Buncombe County Commission on the Status of Women, Helpmate has dedicated itself to supporting survivors of domestic violence, educating the community about healthy relationships, and creating responsive systems for those in need. Incorporated in 1981, Helpmate began with a small network of volunteer advocates and has grown into a statewide leader in addressing violence against women.
Our Journey
Helpmate's journey began with a modest emergency shelter program, which has evolved significantly over the years. From a small apartment to a larger home, Helpmate now operates a shelter that accommodates 225 adult and child victims annually. The organization has played a pivotal role in forming additional support services, including the Buncombe County Family Justice Center, which co-locates various services to provide comprehensive support to survivors.
Impact and Growth
In recent years, Helpmate has experienced remarkable growth, serving 80% more victims and answering triple the number of hotline calls compared to 2012. The implementation of evidence-based programs, such as the Lethality Assessment Protocol, has enhanced the organization's ability to connect victims with immediate support. Helpmate believes in the power of prevention, working collaboratively with local organizations to implement the Pathways to Prevention Plan, aimed at teaching healthy relationship skills and conflict resolution.
