Our Story

The McCormick Research Institute, originally founded as Heavenly Hooves in 2002 by Thomasa Sanchez, began its journey at the Tompkins family's home. This initiative provided equine-assisted activities for children facing life-threatening illnesses. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services to include therapies for individuals with disabilities and veterans suffering from PTSD. In 2014, it was rebranded to honor Ruth McCormick Tankersley, reflecting its growth and commitment to research and education in equine-assisted therapies.

Having served over 20,000 riders, the McCormick Research Institute has emerged as an international leader in equine-assisted therapies, particularly for veterans and individuals with special needs. The organization is dedicated to reducing veteran suicide rates and strengthening families through effective therapeutic programs.
