In the late 1990s, a devastating malaria epidemic claimed over 5,000 lives in northeast India. Recognizing the urgent need for healthcare, NJ Varughese launched a mobile medical ministry in 1999, treating over 100,000 individuals. This initiative laid the groundwork for the establishment of Shanti Bhavan Medical Center in 2007, which now serves thousands of villagers annually through various healthcare initiatives.
