Our Story

CARITAS began as an all-volunteer effort known as “Winter Cots” in the early 1980s, responding to a surge in homelessness due to various social issues. With the support of the faith community, churches and synagogues opened their doors to provide shelter, cots, and blankets to those in need. In 1987, this initiative evolved into CARITAS, which stands for Congregations Around Richmond Involved To Assure Shelter. Over the years, CARITAS has expanded its reach beyond downtown Richmond, becoming a year-round shelter that offers more than just a place to sleep.

At CARITAS, the focus is on setting meaningful goals and tracking progress to meet the community's greatest needs. The organization efficiently utilizes volunteer time, furniture donations, and financial gifts to serve those in need. The annual Impact Report showcases the significant contributions made possible by community support, highlighting the commitment to serving the Richmond area.
