Our Story

Founded in August 1998 in Santa Barbara, California, Heal the Ocean emerged from a community-driven response to local beach closures caused by pollution. Spearheaded by journalist Hillary Hauser and attorney Jeff Young, HTO began as a citizens’ action group advocating for clean waters and beaches. Initially focused on the septic systems at Rincon, a popular surfing spot, the organization has since broadened its mission to encompass various clean water projects and community initiatives.

Our Impact

For over two decades, Heal the Ocean has partnered with government agencies to tackle pollution at its source, ensuring safe ocean waters for both people and marine life. HTO has successfully upgraded wastewater treatment facilities, initiated recycled water studies, and organized beach cleanups, resulting in miles of pristine beaches.
