Discover the Legacy of Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory
Established in 1951, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory has transformed from a local initiative to a globally recognized site for observing raptor migration. Initially, the only witnesses to this magnificent event were local gunners, but thanks to the efforts of the Duluth Bird Club, illegal shooting was curtailed, paving the way for conservation. The first organized hawk watch took place in 1951, and since then, the observatory has expanded its activities to include daily counts from August through November, attracting bird enthusiasts from around the world.
In 1972, the Duluth Audubon Society, with support from The Nature Conservancy, helped secure the land that now comprises the Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve. This 365-acre sanctuary is dedicated to the study and enjoyment of migratory birds, providing a safe haven for raptors and other species. The observatory has been instrumental in conducting systematic counts and research programs, fostering a deeper understanding of bird migration.
