Our Story

The Hawaiian Historical Society, established in 1892, is dedicated to preserving the rich history of Hawai’i. Founded by a group of prominent citizens, including early patron Queen Lili’uokalani, the Society has been a cornerstone for historical research and public education. It publishes scholarly works in both English and Hawaiian, and produces The Hawaiian Journal of History, the only peer-reviewed journal focused on the history of Hawaiians and other cultures in the islands.

Impact

Through free public lectures and a well-stocked library, the Society plays a vital role in preserving and disseminating Hawaiian history, making it accessible to scholars and the public alike.
