The Haven's Inspiring Journey
Founded in January 2010, The Haven at First & Market is a beacon of hope for those experiencing homelessness in Charlottesville, Virginia. The story of The Haven began in 2004 when Jim Barns, a dedicated reference librarian, penned a heartfelt letter highlighting the struggles of the homeless community. This letter sparked a vital conversation about the need for a day shelter in the area.
Film director Tom Shadyac, moved by the plight of the homeless during his time in Charlottesville filming "Evan Almighty," took action. He purchased and renovated the historic First Christian Church, transforming it into a low-barrier day shelter and social resource center. With the help of community advocates and leaders, The Haven opened its doors, providing a safe and welcoming space for individuals and families seeking stability.
Since its inception, The Haven has focused on connecting people to essential resources and creative housing interventions. In 2014, it launched the community's first federally and state-funded program aimed at preventing homelessness. By 2015, The Haven became an independent nonprofit and introduced the Rapid Re-housing program, along with the Laura DeLapp Haven Housing Fund in 2019, furthering its mission to end homelessness in the greater Charlottesville area.
