About Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless

Founded in 1990 by a dedicated group of residents and clergy, the Harwich Ecumenical Council for the Homeless (HECH) was established to combat the growing crisis of homelessness in Harwich and surrounding towns. Initially, volunteers worked tirelessly to find housing solutions for families on the brink of homelessness, with significant support coming from the Housing with Love Walk, initiated by founding Board Member Bob Murray. This annual event saw hundreds of local residents walking from Provincetown to Falmouth for 25 years, raising awareness and funds for families in need.

Over the years, HECH has evolved into a professionally managed, multi-service organization while retaining its grassroots commitment to low and moderate-income families. Today, HECH manages a portfolio of 44 rental units and administers various rental assistance programs funded by local municipalities. The organization also oversees emergency home repair programs and the Libby Arnold Stevens Resident Stabilization Fund, providing crucial support to Barnstable County residents.

Impact of HECH

Currently, HECH provides safe and affordable housing to 117 individuals through its rental program, which adheres to HUD income and rent limits. This initiative is vital for community members struggling to secure stable housing, ensuring that families have a safe place to call home.
