Our Story

The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra has a rich history that dates back to the early 1930s. Founded during the Great Depression by a passionate group of music lovers, the orchestra held its inaugural concert on March 19, 1931, at William Penn High School. Under the direction of George King Raudenbush, the orchestra quickly established itself as a vital cultural institution in Harrisburg, moving to the Forum Auditorium in the Capitol Complex by the end of that year. Over the decades, the HSO has evolved into a fully professional orchestra, captivating tens of thousands of audience members each year.
