Reviving Community Journalism in Harpswell

The Harpswell Anchor, a cherished local newspaper, was founded in 1998 by Robert (Bob) Anderson to capture the unique voice of the Harpswell community. Covering areas such as Harpswell Neck, Orr’s Island, Bailey Island, Great Island, and Cundy’s Harbor, the Anchor became a vital source of information for residents. However, in the fall of 2020, the publication closed its doors, leaving many in the community without a reliable source of local news.

In response to this loss, a dedicated group of local residents came together to revive the Anchor, transforming it into a nonprofit organization under the name Harpswell News. This new structure allows for tax-deductible donations from individuals and businesses, ensuring the sustainability of the publication. In April 2021, fundraising efforts began, and by June 2021, the first edition of the revitalized Harpswell Anchor was published, along with a companion website that provides up-to-date news and community programming.

The new Harpswell Anchor not only continues the legacy of the original publication but also expands its coverage to include important local governance issues and community events. With a commitment to free access to information, the Anchor does not charge for online content or mailed subscriptions, relying instead on the generous support of the community.
