Our Story

In 1983, an interfaith group of leaders from the San Fernando Valley witnessed a troubling rise in homelessness. In response, they rallied local support and funds to purchase a 40-unit motel, The Fiesta Motel, in North Hollywood. This initiative provided families with a safe haven for up to 30 days, allowing them to regain stability and seek long-term solutions. This motel later evolved into LA Family Housing's 'Valley Shelter'. Recognizing the need for diverse strategies to combat homelessness, these leaders partnered with a South L.A.-based developer to create small, affordable apartment buildings in Southeast L.A. In 1988, their merger formed LA Family Housing, combining expertise in temporary and permanent housing to create a comprehensive continuum of care for families in need. Today, LAFH serves over 14,000 individuals annually, making it one of the largest providers of housing and homeless services in Los Angeles.
