Empowering Youth Through Tennis and Education

Founded in 1972 by tennis enthusiasts Claude Cargill and Bill Brown, the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program (HJTEP) was established to provide local youth with access to tennis, a sport often seen as exclusive. Located in Central Harlem, HJTEP has become a beacon of hope, using tennis as a tool for personal development and academic success. The program not only teaches the fundamentals of tennis but also emphasizes the importance of education, with a Homework Club launched in 1979 to support students academically.

Impacting Lives Since 1972

HJTEP has positively impacted over 25,000 children, with 95% of student-athletes graduating high school and 80% going on to college. The program has helped 65% of its graduates secure non-athletic financial aid, while 25% have earned tennis scholarships to prestigious institutions.
