Preserving the Beauty of Harding Township

In 1989, the stunning 56-acre meadow on Blue Mill Road, now known as Margetts Field, captured the heart of long-time Harding Township resident Jay Kemmerer. This iconic landscape, with its seasonal beauty, represented the essence of Harding Township. Jay's vision was clear: he wanted future generations to enjoy this unspoiled view. Alongside a group of passionate advocates and members of the Harding Township Committee, Jay worked tirelessly to ensure that this hilltop meadow would be preserved for the enjoyment and benefit of all.

With their efforts, Margetts Field became the first property preserved by the Township, marking the beginning of a movement dedicated to safeguarding the treasured landscapes of Harding Township. The Harding Land Trust was formally incorporated in 1990, overcoming initial state objections to its name. By 1992, the Harding Land Trust was officially recognized, providing a platform for residents to engage in conservation initiatives and open-space preservation.

As development pressures threatened the streams and wetlands of New Vernon, the Harding Land Trust emerged as a vital advocate for the environment. The organization quickly became involved in stewardship, preserving unique properties like the 30-acre land on Dickson’s Mill Road, which was donated by Jane Koven in 1990. This donation marked the first gift to the Harding Land Trust, ensuring that the pristine stream, meadow, and surrounding wooded hillside would be protected for the community and its wildlife.

Impact of the Harding Land Trust

Thanks to the inspiration of Jay Kemmerer and other visionary residents, the Harding Land Trust has successfully preserved over 500 acres of open space and environmentally-sensitive land. This achievement not only protects the natural beauty of Harding Township but also supports the local ecosystem and wildlife.
