Our Story

The Harambee Institute was established in the early 1970s as an Independent Black Institution in response to a teacher strike in Philadelphia. Founders created educational hubs in West Philadelphia to ensure uninterrupted schooling for students. This initiative led to the founding of the Harambee Institute of Science and Technology, Pennsylvania’s first African-centered charter school in 1997, dedicated to reconnecting students with their African heritage.

Impact

Harambee has achieved remarkable academic success, with record-breaking PSSA test scores and numerous scholarships awarded to students. The school is also recognized for its outstanding athletic programs and community engagement through arts initiatives.
