Our Story
Founded in June 1998, Hands & Hooves Riding Rescue & Rehabilitation emerged from the community's need for affordable therapeutic horseback riding classes. Initially operating outdoors in Poplar Grove, IL, the program began with just two rented horses and served eight riders weekly. As demand grew, the program relocated to Capron, IL, in 1999, where it expanded its services and began housing donated horses.
By 2002, the program moved to a larger facility in Marengo, IL, allowing it to serve over 40 riders weekly and acquire more horses. In 2009, Hands & Hooves found a new home in Maple Park, IL, where it offered private therapeutic riding lessons and expanded its rescue efforts. In 2014, the organization rescued and rehabilitated over 167 hooved animals from severe cruelty cases, including horses, donkeys, and even llamas.
Currently, Hands & Hooves operates from a donated facility in Wayne, IL, utilizing 7.5 acres and seven spacious stalls. The organization is entirely volunteer-run, ensuring that 100% of donations directly support the mission of helping both people and animals in need.
