Our Story
Hand to Hand Hunger Project (H2H) was founded in 1987 by dedicated City of Santa Monica employees who recognized a critical need in their community. On Saturdays, many neighbors were going hungry, prompting them to make sandwiches in City Hall and serve them on the front lawn. This grassroots effort, led by City Attorney Robert Myers, was fueled by personal contributions to buy sandwich ingredients. Over the years, H2H has evolved significantly, especially under the leadership of Executive Director Debbie Baxter since 1997. Today, H2H not only provides meals but also offers hot coffee, clothing, hygiene essentials, and even haircuts, creating a welcoming environment for those in need.
In partnership with the City of Santa Monica and local organizations like the American Martyrs Catholic Church and St. Francis Meals on Wheels, H2H has expanded its services to include a free clothing and hygiene store and freshly cooked meals. The Funding Passion and Love Foundation, established in honor of a former volunteer, continues to provide essential support. H2H is committed to fostering compassion and respect for individuals experiencing homelessness, ensuring they receive the dignity they deserve.
