Our Story

The Hancock County Humane Foundation was established to operate the Hancock County Animal Shelter with a humane model that prioritizes the well-being of animals. Euthanasia is reserved solely for cases of suffering or when rehabilitation is not feasible. In 2016, after the operational contract was not renewed, the Foundation recognized unmet animal welfare needs and reorganized to enhance outreach efforts. Today, it connects animal welfare advocates to provide low-cost spay/neuter clinics, TNR programs, emergency medical assistance, and community education.

Our Impact

For over 30 years, the Foundation has been a beacon of hope for animals in Hancock County. Each year, it completely vets and houses over 200 cats, finding them forever homes through adoption events. With 25 low-cost spay and neuter clinics held, over 1,000 cats have been altered, preventing tens of thousands of potential shelter admissions and euthanasia.
