Our Story

In the late 1980s, a group of compassionate women from the Faith United Methodist Church in Greenfield initiated an emergency food box program to assist families in need. Recognizing the growing demand, the Greenfield Ministerial Association joined forces with these dedicated volunteers in 1992, leading to the official launch of the Hancock County Food Pantry in April 1993. Initially operating under the First Church of God, the Pantry became an independent nonprofit in 1995.

Over the years, the Pantry has evolved from a small closet to a spacious facility at 2040 W. Main St. in Greenfield, boasting 7,200 square feet of service area. This growth reflects the increasing need for food assistance, with the Pantry averaging 809 families served each month in 2023. The Pantry operates entirely on volunteer efforts, ensuring that every donation goes directly to those in need.

Impact

In 2023, the Hancock County Food Pantry distributed approximately 1.5 million pounds of food, serving an average of 865 households in the first half of 2024. Notably, 56% of these households visited the Pantry three times or less, highlighting its role as a vital stop-gap measure for families facing food insecurity.
