Hakone Estate and Gardens
EIN: 77-0054274 · Saratoga, CA
Our Story
The Hakone Estate and Gardens, originally the private estate of Isabel and Oliver Stine, was inspired by Japanese gardens after their visit to the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. The gardens, designed by a Japanese gardener, became a cherished family retreat. In 1966, the City of Saratoga acquired Hakone to preserve it as a public park, leading to the establishment of the Hakone Foundation to support its maintenance and enhancement.
Impact
Recognized as a national treasure, Hakone Gardens has received funding from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The foundation has successfully restored the gardens, ensuring their beauty and accessibility for all.
