Empowering Girls and Young Women

From her groundbreaking entry into the military in 1964 to becoming one of the first African American female police officers in 1976, Gwen's legacy is one of breaking barriers and championing the rights of women and girls. Witnessing the struggles faced by young women during her tenure on the Pittsburgh Police force, Gwen was determined to create a better future for them. In 2002, her dream materialized with the establishment of Gwen's Girls, an organization dedicated to providing gender-responsive programs and services to empower girls and young women.

Our Impact

Gwen's Girls has been a beacon of hope since its inception, offering essential resources and support to young women in the community. The organization is currently embarking on an exciting journey to build a new, permanent home in Wilkinsburg, which will include a STEM learning lab, a recording studio, a commercial teaching kitchen, and mental health services. This new space will allow for increased participation and the development of innovative programs that meet the needs of the girls and their families.
