In the 1940s, Long Beach faced a significant challenge: mental health support for children was scarce. Families struggled to understand their children's behaviors, leading to communication breakdowns and, in some cases, abusive environments. Recognizing this urgent need, a group of visionary public school teachers and counselors founded The Guidance Center in 1946. Their mission was clear: to provide help and hope to children and families grappling with mental health challenges.

For over 70 years, The Guidance Center has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. With a dedicated team of nearly 200 mental health professionals, the organization offers comprehensive, evidence-based mental health services tailored to each child's unique needs. By removing barriers to access, therapists meet children where they are—whether in schools, hospitals, homes, or foster care.

Headquartered in Long Beach, The Guidance Center has expanded its reach by opening additional clinics in Compton, Lynwood, Paramount, San Pedro, and Avalon on Catalina Island. This strategic growth allows the organization to serve over 3,000 children and families annually, ensuring that mental health care is accessible to those who need it most.

Under the leadership of Patricia Costales, LCSW, The Guidance Center continues to forge partnerships with civic leaders and local organizations. By educating the community about mental illness and implementing effective healing solutions, the organization stands as a beacon of hope for disadvantaged families.
