Our Story

The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA (GHRC) was founded in 1982 during the turmoil of Guatemala’s internal armed conflict. Inspired by the poverty and discrimination faced by the Guatemalan people, Sister Alice Zachmann, SSND, left her parish ministry in Minnesota to unite with former missionaries and refugees. GHRC has since dedicated itself to promoting human rights and supporting those who face threats and violence in Guatemala.

Impact

GHRC provides vital analysis, education, and advocacy for human rights defenders. The organization focuses on key areas such as militarization, women’s rights, and access to land. GHRC also assists Guatemalans seeking asylum in the U.S. and monitors the effects of U.S. migration policies on deported migrants.
