About the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra

The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra has deep roots dating back to the 1920s, when a group of musicians at Woman’s College (now UNCG) came together to create beautiful music. In 1939, the orchestra was formally organized by H. Hugh Altvater, the Dean of Music, and has since evolved into a vital cultural institution in Greensboro. With the establishment of the Greensboro Symphony Society in 1959, the orchestra has flourished, promoting musical culture and education in the community. Under the leadership of the new Music Director, Christopher Dragon, starting in the 2024-2025 season, the orchestra is poised for exciting growth.
