Our Story

The Green Schools Alliance was born on World Environment Day, June 5, 2006, inspired by Mayor Bloomberg’s challenge to reduce New York City’s carbon footprint. Launched on October 11, 2007, with 46 schools, the Alliance empowers educational institutions to tackle environmental challenges through sustainable practices.

Impact

Nearly 10,000 schools have benefited from the Green Schools Alliance's initiatives, fostering climate stewardship and sustainability through innovative programs and tools like the START: Sustainability Tracking and Roadmap Tool.
