Our Story

Founded in 1974, the Greater Southwest Development Corporation (GSDC) emerged from grassroots efforts to hold banks accountable for disinvestment in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. Initially focused on easing racial tensions, GSDC has evolved to stimulate economic investment, transforming the area into a vibrant, diverse community. Under the visionary leadership of James F. Capraro, GSDC has successfully implemented over half a billion dollars in neighborhood development projects.

Impact

GSDC has completed and manages three senior housing properties, providing 170 units of independent senior housing and 86 supportive living units. With over $30 million invested, these developments have revitalized 63rd Street, eliminating blighted buildings and enhancing community well-being.
