Our Story

Founded in 1981, the Greater Chicago Legal Clinic began as the South Chicago Legal Clinic, addressing the legal needs of a community affected by the decline of the steel industry. Over the years, GCLC has evolved into a vital regional provider of civil legal services, assisting over 500,000 clients across Chicagoland. The Clinic is dedicated to expanding access to justice for low-income and historically underrepresented individuals, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to receive compassionate and effective legal representation.

Impact

In 2023 alone, GCLC staff and volunteers handled 4,784 cases, positively impacting 9,261 individuals, including 3,052 children. An impressive 97% of clients reported that their attorney clearly explained their case and options, while 98% would recommend GCLC to others.
