Our Story
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, formerly known as the Lewiston-Auburn SPCA, has a rich history dating back to 1885. Initially focused on protecting work horses and children from abuse, the organization evolved to create a safe haven for stray animals. In 1972, with the help of generous donations, the first shelter was built in Auburn, ME, which has since undergone numerous renovations to accommodate the increasing number of animals in need. Today, GAHS assists over 3,500 animals annually, continuing to adapt to the community's needs.
