About Great Marsh Institute

The Great Marsh Institute (GMI) is dedicated to the preservation and protection of the Great Marsh, a vital ecological area located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Spanning approximately 700 acres, this periglacial marsh is the largest of its kind in Southeastern Pennsylvania and is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Historical Significance

The Great Marsh has a storied history, with evidence of human use dating back to prehistoric times. Native Americans utilized the land, leaving behind traces such as charcoal. In the mid-20th century, the marsh faced significant threats from development and environmental degradation, including a proposal for a residential development known as Morganshire Village. Thanks to the tireless efforts of conservation groups and community members, this development was successfully halted.

Current Conservation Efforts

Today, the Great Marsh is protected by conservation easements held by the Brandywine Conservancy and the French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust. These protections ensure that the marsh remains a sanctuary for over 150 bird species and 160 plant species, as well as various mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. The marsh has also been designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Audubon, highlighting its ecological significance.
