Empowering Communities Through Grassroots Internationalism
Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) was founded in response to the economic justice struggles against NAFTA and the WTO Battle in Seattle. In 2002, a delegation of U.S. organizers returned from the second World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil, igniting a vision to connect grassroots community organizers from low-income and racially marginalized communities with social movements worldwide. This vision materialized at the first Membership Assembly in 2005, hosted by the Southwest Workers Union in San Antonio, Texas.
GGJ develops the capacity for grassroots organizers to engage strategically with international movements through what is known as Grassroots Internationalism. By fostering reciprocal solidarity, GGJ connects movement leaders fighting against the destruction of hydroelectric dams in Latin America with community members in Detroit organizing against water shut-offs. Since 2003, over 1,000 U.S.-based grassroots organizers have participated in GGJ international delegations, returning inspired and equipped to implement lessons learned into their local campaigns.
As GGJ enters its 15th year, it stands as a multi-racial, multi-sectoral alliance of over 60 member organizations dedicated to building a popular movement for peace, democracy, and a sustainable world. The work is intergenerational and gender-inclusive, highlighting the leadership of women, gender non-conforming individuals, LGBTQ communities, and historically marginalized groups in the U.S., including Black, Latina/o, Asian Pacific Islanders, Arab, and white working-class people.
