Founded in 2012 by Liz Gruber and Tara Smith Tyberg, Grad Bag began as a grassroots initiative to recycle dorm room goods that students were discarding. Witnessing the waste firsthand, the founders recognized the potential to support students in need while promoting sustainability. What started in their basements has blossomed into a formal 501(c)(3) organization, partnering with 16 colleges and over 20 grantee organizations across New York and Boston.
Since its inception, Grad Bag has outfitted thousands of students for college. In 2019 alone, nearly 20,000 lbs. of linens, lamps, rugs, and other essential items were collected, benefiting over 1,700 students during giveaway events in New York City, Yonkers, Boston, and Portland, Maine. After a successful relaunch in 2022, Grad Bag is excited to continue its mission in 2023, reaching even more students along the East Coast.
