Our Story

Founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia began as a mission to uplift the lives of unemployed immigrants in Boston’s South End. Helms pioneered a unique approach by collecting donations of clothing and household goods from wealthier neighborhoods, employing individuals to mend and sell these items. This innovative social enterprise model focused on providing a "hand up, not a hand out," transforming lives through commerce and employment.

Impact

Since its local inception in 1923, Goodwill has been dedicated to enhancing the social well-being of the Richmond and Hampton Roads communities through job training and support services.
