Our Story

Founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, Goodwill began with a mission to assist unemployed immigrants in Boston. This innovative approach of collecting donations and employing individuals to mend and sell items laid the groundwork for a social enterprise model that focuses on job training and support for those facing barriers to employment. Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia has been serving the Richmond community since 1923 and merged with Hampton Roads in 2006 to enhance its impact.

With over 50 million pounds of donations processed and more than 1,300 team members across 36 retail locations, the organization plays a vital role in the community.
