Good Shepherd Ministries of Wilmington Inc
EIN: 56-1566178 · Wilmington, NC
Organizational Story
Good Shepherd Ministries began in 1983 when a group of compassionate individuals recognized the urgent need to help the hungry on the streets of Wilmington. This initiative led to the establishment of a Soup Kitchen, where warm meals were served to those in need. As the demand for food grew, the organization launched the Second Helpings program, a food salvage initiative that collects surplus food from grocery stores to prepare meals for the community.
In 1987, the need for a safe haven for the homeless became evident, prompting the creation of the Day Shelter Program. This program evolved to offer various services, including assistance with obtaining identification, mail services, and referrals to other agencies. The Jobs Program was introduced to connect homeless individuals with day labor opportunities, fostering a sense of dignity and purpose.
Recognizing the need for transitional housing, Good Shepherd Ministries opened the Sergeant Eugene Ashley Memorial Transitional Living Center in 2001, providing a supportive environment for veterans in recovery. This initiative not only offered housing but also preserved a historic building in Wilmington.
In 2002, the organization relocated its Soup Kitchen and Day Shelter to new facilities, culminating in the opening of a modern 11,000 sq. ft. building in 2003. This facility houses administrative offices, the Soup Kitchen, the Second Helpings Program, and the Day Shelter, which expanded to include a medical screening clinic in 2004.
Today, Good Shepherd Ministries serves over 900 individuals annually through its Day Shelter and provides more than 70,000 hot meals through its Soup Kitchen. The organization has grown to become the largest provider of homeless services in the region, continuing to adapt and respond to the needs of the community.
