Good Samaritan at the Baker Estate

Our Story

The Good Samaritan at the Baker Estate has a rich history dating back to 1920, when it was founded as a community-centered hospital by German immigrant Martha Schultze. Initially serving unwed mothers, it became a safe haven during a time of racial segregation. In 1951, James and Bertha Baker transformed it into the Baker Residential Hotel, providing housing for black migrants in Dallas. Today, Vanessa Baker, the current owner and daughter of Bertha Baker, is dedicated to restoring this historic structure to continue its legacy of service.

Impact

The organization aims to serve as a community resource, hosting educational workshops, scholarship programs for underserved students, and cultural events. By addressing systemic issues such as drug infestation and gang activity, it promotes historical preservation and inclusivity in Dallas.
